Leveling and cultivation
This page was last checked against game version 0.2.1; the game is now at 0.3.0. Some explanations may be out of date (tables are always current).
You level up by collecting EXP from fights, timed actions, crafting and bonus finds; every level gives you attribute points. Cultivation is a second, separate path: you meditate to gather Qi and rise through the stages of Qi Condensation and Foundation Establishment, which raise your HP, attack and defence.
Where does EXP come from?
Section titled “Where does EXP come from?”- Monsters. Every win gives EXP; stronger and higher-level monsters give more. See the monster list.
- Timed actions. Gathering, hunting, chopping wood and meditating give a little EXP each run.
- Crafting. Every finished recipe gives some EXP, see Crafting.
- The class trial. Winning it once gives 800 EXP, see Classes.
- Scene finds. Now and then a small find glints in the scene. Click it in time to collect it. Some finds are EXP, a small share of what you need for your next level. See Scene finds.
- Your party. In a party, members on the same map get a share of each other’s EXP on top.
- The Momentum check. Solving the check that sometimes interrupts Momentum can pay EXP.
Do weak enemies give less EXP?
Section titled “Do weak enemies give less EXP?”Yes. If an enemy’s level is 5 or more below yours, the kill gives only 20% of its character EXP (always at least 1). Enemies at your level, above it or less far below give full EXP.
This counts for normal monsters, elites, zone bosses and dungeon rooms. Gold, loot and profession EXP stay the same, and the class trial and the Heavenly Tribulation are not affected. In a party, your mates’ share is taken from the reduced amount.
So move on to the next zone once the monsters fall far behind your level: you level much faster against enemies that match you.
How do EXP bonuses work?
Section titled “How do EXP bonuses work?”Bonuses raise every EXP gain by a percentage, for your character level and for your professions:
- Rested: sleep at the Inn “The Weary Boar”.
- Well Fed: eat food such as
Roast Rabbit or
Hearty Stew.
- The Collection book: some milestones add a permanent EXP bonus, see Attributes and stats.
Different bonuses add up. The same buff does not stack with itself; using it again only renews its timer.
How much EXP do you need per level?
Section titled “How much EXP do you need per level?”The EXP for the next level grows faster than the level itself, so each level takes a bit longer than the one before. From level 100 on it grows by an extra factor per level. EXP you earn beyond a level carries over, and one big reward can give several levels at once.
Formula
EXP for the next level = ⌊50 × level^1.8⌋ (from level 100 also × 1.01^(level − 100))Example: Going from level 10 to level 11 takes 3,154 EXP.

How does cultivation work?
Section titled “How does cultivation work?”Start Meditate in the Forest of Beginnings or Meditate at the Spirit Spring in the Mistfen Marshes to gather Qi. Enough Qi raises your stage automatically, and every stage multiplies your max HP, attack and defence. Mana and stamina are not affected.
At the last stage of a realm your Qi pool fills up. To go further you need a breakthrough into the next realm and must survive the Heavenly Tribulation. All details, the Qi per stage and the bonus per realm are on Cultivation and breakthrough.
| Stage | Qi to next stage | HP, attack, defence |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 100 | 0% |
| 2 | 200 | +2% |

| 7 | 700 | +12% |
| 8 | 800 | +14% |
| 9 | 900 (full pool) | +16% |
What do the early stages unlock?
Section titled “What do the early stages unlock?”At stage 2 your Qi awakens:
- You can use
Qi Strike, a mana skill that ignores part of the enemy’s defence.
- You choose your element affinity once, on the Character screen. Skills that use your affinity, like
Qi Strike, deal more damage to enemies of the element yours is strong against, and less to the one it is weak against. Monsters also hit you harder or softer depending on your affinity. The choice is permanent, so look at the monsters you fight most. The Glossary lists which element beats which.
Tips and common mistakes
Section titled “Tips and common mistakes”- Meditate while you do other things. Meditation is a normal timed action, so it fits well between fights or while you wait for your HP to refill.
- Cultivate early. The stage bonus multiplies everything, so it grows with you. Stage 2 also gives you a strong new skill.
- Use EXP buffs before long sessions. Sleep at the inn and eat before you go hunting, not afterwards.
- Don’t forget your points. Unspent attribute points do nothing; check the Character screen after each level up.
