Mining, smithing and geodes

This page was last checked against game version 0.2.1; the game is now at 0.3.0. Some explanations may be out of date (tables are always current).

Mining is a gathering profession: with a pickaxe you break ore in the forest and the marshes. Smithing is the matching production profession that turns ore into ingots and ingots into a better pickaxe. Master miners also find the rare Geode, which can hold a little Jade.

Action Place Main find Tool
Mine Ore Forest of Beginnings Copper Ore Pickaxe
Dig Bog Iron Mistfen Marshes Bog Iron Ore Pickaxe

Mine Ore takes 5 min and is open from the start. Dig Bog Iron takes 12 min and pays more profession EXP; you reach the marshes by ferry from level 12. There is no mining on the Saltwind Coast.

Besides ore, mining turns up Ember Shard, Spirit Stone and, at higher mining levels, gems such as Garnet and Moonstone. The action tables on the zone pages list every find with its chance: see World & Zones and Mistfen Marshes.

  • The Pickaxe unlocks mining. Buy it at the market in the village (45 Gold) or from the Stiltwater Trader in the marshes (55 Gold).
  • The Iron Pickaxe also counts as a pickaxe. Each mining run takes ×0.85 the time and gives +1 ore. The smithy sells it for 240 Gold, or you smith it yourself.

Tools work from your bag; you don’t equip them, and they don’t wear out. Keep your pickaxe: if you sell your only one, you can’t mine until you buy a new one.

Mining uses the same ladder as the other gathering professions: each level raises your yield and your chance of rare finds a little, some levels add a chance of a double harvest, and Keen Eye tiers unlock new finds. Dexterity also helps, as with every gathering profession; see Attributes.

Smithing burns wood into Charcoal, smelts ore into Copper Ingot and Iron Ingot, and forges the Iron Pickaxe. Wreck Iron from the coast smelts into iron ingots without charcoal.

Ingots go into Crafting recipes such as the Garnet Ring, the Moonstone Amulet and several pieces of class gear. Like every production profession, smithing gets a chance of extra output and of saving materials as it levels; see Crafting.

A Geode only drops from Dig Bog Iron, and only once your Mining level is at least 60 (the highest Keen Eye tier). Then each run has a 1% chance. Bonuses to rare finds from your profession or events do not raise it.

No shop sells geodes. You can trade them in the Auction House or sell them to a shop for 25 Gold.

Opening is instant and free, anywhere except in a fight or a dungeon. You can open up to 10 geodes at once. Each geode gives exactly one result from this table:

Jade from a geode is always Bound Jade: it goes to the account of the player who opens the geode. You can spend it, but never offer it on the Jade exchange. See Jade.

  • Start in the forest. Mine Ore is short and open from the start; the marsh ore needs the ferry.
  • Keep charcoal in stock. Most ingots need it; burn spare logs into charcoal.
  • Smith the iron pickaxe early. It saves time on every run from then on.
  • Don’t mine for Jade. Geodes are a rare bonus for master miners, not a Jade income.
