Getting started
This page was last checked against game version 0.2.1; the game is now at 0.3.0. Some explanations may be out of date (tables are always current).
Getting started in AscendMMO is guided: a new character begins the First steps chain, a short list of tasks that walks you through gathering, fighting, the village, crafting and your first gear. Each finished step pays a small reward on the spot. This page follows the same path and tells you what opens up afterwards.
What is the First steps chain?
Section titled “What is the First steps chain?”A card on the main screen shows your current step and its reward, and during your first levels an arrow points at the button you need. Steps you already did early count straight away, so you never have to repeat anything. Rewards (EXP, Gold, a Wooden Sword and healing potions) are paid automatically when a step is done.
The chain takes you through these steps, in this order:
- First harvest: gather herbs and use Momentum.
- First fight: win a fight in the forest.
- Grow stronger: spend your attribute points.
- To the village: sell some loot.
- A soft bed: sleep at the inn.
- Daily gift: claim today’s reward from the Login calendar.
- The hunt: hunt rabbits.
- Handiwork: craft something.
- Stronger foes: level up a little; you receive the Wooden Sword.
- Armed and ready: equip it.
- Ready for the world: reach level 5, where the world chat opens.
You can skip the chain in its menu at any time, but open steps then give no reward, and a skipped chain can’t be restarted.
How do actions work?
Section titled “How do actions work?”An action is a timed job: you start it, the timer runs, and when it ends you collect the loot, EXP and profession EXP. Actions keep running while you are offline, and you can repeat an action several times in a row.
These are the actions of the Forest of Beginnings:
| Action | Time | Profession EXP | EXP | Rewards (chance) | Cost (Gold) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gather HerbsSearch the undergrowth for herbs. | 5 min | 13Herbalism | 5 |
| — |
| Hunt RabbitsTrack rabbits through the ferns. Requires a knife.Needs: | 5 min | 13Hunting | 6 |
| — |
| Chop WoodFell dead branches from the old oaks. Requires a hatchet.Needs: | 5 min | 13Woodcutting | 5 |
| — |
| Mine OreBreak copper ore from the old quarry at the forest's edge. Requires a pickaxe.Needs: | 5 min | 13Mining | 5 |
| — |
| MeditateSit beneath the old oak and draw in Qi. | 30 min | — | 5 |
| — |
- Gather Herbs brings
Healing Herb, the base of many potions.
- Hunt Rabbits needs a knife; your starting knife (
Rusty Knife) is enough. It gives
Rabbit Fur and
Meat.
- Chopping wood and mining need their tool from the market, see Shops.
How does Momentum speed things up?
Section titled “How does Momentum speed things up?”While an action runs, press Momentum (or the space bar). Every press takes time off the run, and each press saves more than the last: 30 s first, then 10 s more per press, up to 2 min. The button recharges for a few seconds after each press.
The ladder carries over into the next run of a repeated action and starts again after 1 min without a press. Now and then the button asks you to tap a picture; solve it for a small bonus. See Momentum.
How does your first fight go?
Section titled “How does your first fight go?”In the forest, start a fight. Your first opponents are slimes, for example Green Slime. Each round you pick an attack, a skill or an item; skills cost stamina or mana. Winning gives EXP, Gold and sometimes loot.
- HP don’t refill after a fight. They come back slowly by themselves, or quickly by sleeping, eating or drinking a potion. See Recovery.
- Losing sends you back to the village with 10% of your HP, and you are Weakened I: 15% less attack and defence for 10 min.
- The cure is a
Lesser Cleansing Draught. Outside a fight it removes Weakened and heals 50 HP. Alchemists brew it from healing herbs and a rabbit foot, see Crafting.
With each level you get attribute points. Spend them on the Character page; see Attributes and stats.
What do you do in the village?
Section titled “What do you do in the village?”Dawnmere Village lies next to the forest; travelling between the two is instant.
- Sell your loot in the Sell tab of a village shop. “Sell all grey” in the inventory sells grey junk from your loot in one go. See Selling.
- Sleep at the Inn “The Weary Boar” (Sleep at the inn): full HP and mana after 3 min, free, and you wake up Rested with more EXP for a while.
- Buy tools, potions and gear, see Shops.
- Claim the daily reward from the Login calendar in the top bar: Jade or crafting materials, see Login calendar.
How do your bags work?
Section titled “How do your bags work?”Your inventory has two bags: Equipment for gear and tools, Resources for everything else. When a bag is full, new items wait in an overflow until you make room. You can enlarge each bag at the Satchel maker in the village or by sewing a satchel such as the Leather Satchel into it; see Items.
What should you craft first?
Section titled “What should you craft first?”Open Crafting and pick a recipe you have the materials for, for example a Leather Strap from rabbit fur. The list is split into equipment and materials & consumables. Crafting is a timed action too, so Momentum works. See Crafting.
What opens up as you level?
Section titled “What opens up as you level?”| From level | What opens |
|---|---|
| 5 | Parties: shared EXP and group fights |
| 5 | The world chat, see Chat and friends |
| 5 | Trading at the Auction House; also needs a verified email address |
| 10 | Coast Road to the Saltwind Coast, see Saltwind Coast |
| 12 | Ferry to the Marshes, see Mistfen Marshes |
| 15 | Your class at the Soul Shrine, see Classes |
Meditating in the forest starts your cultivation right from the beginning; see Cultivation and breakthrough.
Tips for new players
Section titled “Tips for new players”- Keep something running. An action that runs while you read the chat or sort your bag is free progress.
- Sleep before you push on. A full heal plus Rested beats fighting on with half your HP.
- Keep your tools. Selling your only knife or hatchet locks you out of that action until you buy a new one.
- Fight at your level. Enemies 5 or more levels below you give much less EXP, see Leveling.
